Bike Train

Every week the kid's Elementary School holds a 'Bike Train'.  They set a meeting place and encourage all the kids to meet there and bike to school.  This was a special one as Olympian Sarah Hammer biked with us.  She lives in Temecula and just took home a silver medal in this past Summer Olympics.

Too busy biking to get a pic of the actual bike train but here we are at the school.  I think close to 100 kids all biked there together.

Our Mayor Chuck Washington.  I love this guy.  He is perpetually happy and a genuinely good person.  I've met him a few times and he is always all smiles.  Last year Lila went on a field trip to City Hall and time was running out so the mayor told the kids they would run through City Hall.  Lila thought that was so awesome.

Rest assured, greasy hair never stops me from taking a picture.

*Little side note.  We left our home at 8 am to make it to the bike train by 8:30.  I wanted to have plenty of time because the meeting spot was all uphill for us and I thought we would have to walk our bikes more than we did.  I also wanted to give the kids plenty of time to talk to Sarah before everyone got there, plus I am just a really prompt person (or really try to be).  Between that, all the hoopla, actually getting to the school, taking pics and talking to some friends I didn't make it home until 9:10.  70 minutes to get my kids to school?  Well, they had fun and as parents that's all that really matters.

  3. Un-greasy, washed hair is WAY overrated in my opinion. :)

  4. I feel like having a bike train like that makes kids more excited about exercise and biking so it's a great idea! Especially when local celebs get involved. Very cool!

  5. That is so cool! I'd be excited even now if I got to meet an Olympian and the mayor--I can only imagine how awesome it would have been as a kid. What a genius idea to get kids excited about being active. And I totally want to run through City Hall now, too.

  7. How awesome to meet an Olympic cyclist and bike with her!

I've been walking Emma to school everyday. Short legs plus it being nearly a mile there (and another mile back with Johnny and Lily still walking/swapping turns riding on the stroller board) means it takes nearly an hour! But hey, we all get exercise, right?

  8. Wow! This just gave me another inspiration for the whole endocrinology scheme... Young kids are starting to get type II diabetes so activities like this definitely are a must

  9. Wow, this is awesome. I love stuff like this. I was telling Gwyneth that we are so blessed to be living right now. During these last olympics women broke the historical record for receiving the most medals in the games. That's great that she came out to greet all of the kids and participate in the bike ride. Hope your weekend has been nice. Love you all,

  10. What a cool event! I always biked to school, until high school - it was about 4 miles away and while I wouldn't have minded getting to school sweaty (being a field hockey player) my pom pom twin sister wouldn't even think of it - so her boyfriend picked us up every day to go to school.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

  11. Hollister does something similiar in the spring. All the kids/families who bike to school that day get a special, healthy breakfast treat before school (if they wore helmets, too of course). Our school is 4 miles away so we leave extra early, too. But no Olympian for us. That is super cool!! The most we've got is a free Tshirt handed out to us when we passed our City Hall. LOL. Love and miss you guys!

  19. Like adults, kids also needs exercise. Regular exercise can help keep our child's body fit and healthy.
