Busy! We did not stop this weekend. If you want to take a nap, don't have kids, they expect too much. Things like a snack after school, and since they love those soft mall pretzels I celebrated the end of the week with a favorite treat. Yes that is a full cookie sheet, those pretzels are Huge!
The main reason I make yummy homemade baked goods is because I want the kids to have these moments burned into their memory. I want them to tell their kids (and friends, acquaintances, anyone who will listen) "my mom was the best, she always made the yummiest stuff when I was a kid, when I came home there were cinnamon rolls or cookies or homemade bread. EVERYDAY!!.....and then we went and played in the backyard with our unicorns and ponies". Of course I don't bake everyday, but we all know how memories go, and whatever my motives, homemade stuff gets made.
1. Saw a rainbow during a run.
2. Played Cranium with Ethan.
3. Took my kids, Jeannette's kids and a friend to Jamba Juice.
4. My brother Adam's dog, they came for a short visit.
5. Took the kids to a pet store. That bird was 2 grand. Of course my kids begged for it but it was so loud and annoying I told them they couldn't pay me 2 grand to take it.
6. Finished this book with the kids.
7. Made a Mississippi Mud Cake. RICH!!!
8. Made their Christmas list for the next 10 years at this toy store at the mall.
About half the book was words, and half the book was pictures, both were mesmerizing. It was wonderfully written and I can't say enough how much I loved the originality of the book. The title of the book was 'The Adventures of Hugo Cabret'. About a year later I heard they were making a movie of the book titled 'HUGO'. Of course being in love with the book we had to see the movie. It was spectacular. Reading the book first and then seeing it come to life so fantastically on the screen was wonderful.
When I saw this book 'WonderStruck' by the same author, Brian Selznick, at Costco I was so tempted to buy it, but it kind of goes against my nature to pay full price for books. So seeing it at the library last week I ripped it off the shelf before anyone else could. Not that anyone else wanted it, but better safe than sorry.
In the same vein as 'The adventures of Hugo Cabret' there is both writing and beautiful drawings, twists and mystery, suspense and intrigue. I love Brian Selznick's mind. From his books it is apparent he has a fascination with the out of the ordinary and is a genius storyteller.
Let me also expound on the cake. I have lovely visions of baking with the children, but what started out innocently enough with it being Ethan's turn to 'help' turned into Lila pouting on the sofa with me being the nurturing mother I am telling her "Lila, I know your pouting you need to get over it it's Ethan's turn", I am super sweet like that. Oh have them work together? Yeah we tried that. I think that's where the phrase 'too many cooks in the kitchen' comes from.
Then the kids proceeded to use the leftover marshmallows for some sort of basketball game involving cups of milk all around the kitchen then they decided to make 'marshmallow taffy' in the microwave, their original recipe. Good times at the Wallworks.
Oh & I stand corrected.
Gwyneth finished that book a couple of weeks ago. She read it in two days. She loved it. Right now she's reading "Escape: The story of the Great Houdini," "The Evolution of Calpernia Tate," and "Strawberry Girl." You should see her Marie, she sits down for lunch, these three books piled up and she rotates reading from each one. She cracks me up!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking a while back that you hadn't mentioned or put any pictures up of J. sister or her kids. Good to see them.
Guess what? Jule moved into my ward. And I am her kids CTR 8 teacher. They are so cute, and big!
What a great weekend. Glad you are baking. Wish I was there. Love you so much,
Shauna xoxoxoxo
PS. You have a surprise coming your way.... :)
Sounds like a fantastic weekend to me!
ReplyDeletewow..you need to post our recipe Marie!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like the kids and you guys had a great time! I like the rainbow too--makes you happy!
Ooh I've heard good things about the Hugo movie- I'll make sure to get the book from the library after graduation (I never buy books either...) It makes a world of a difference when you watch the movie after reading the book because there's just so much stuff that is missed in the movie :(
ReplyDeleteI so get what you mean about having those memories of your mom making something for you. I was pretty much never allowed sweets as a kid but I do remember my grandma making me eggs and cutting them into boat like shapes. She would then put pepper slices on top to make them look like sails :) I can never forget that!
I wonder what my kids will remember about me. Will it be lots of homemade healthy stuff or all the treats? It could go either way :)
DeleteMy best friend has a blue & gold macaw--and yes, you were wise not to buy it, haha. She loves it, but oh lord, it is the loudest, neediest, screech-iest pet ever. And homemade pretzels are my favorite! Can I come over after school and join your kids in eating fresh-baked treats? ;)
ReplyDeleteAt lease someone got a nap in!! Gah, that cake! Totally insulin worthy!
ReplyDeleteThe cake is.. my god!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait till my boy is old enough for us to share chapter books together..
I would ask for the recipe to that divine chocolate blob.........but I would probably end up eating myself since none of my kids eat sweets around here.......I know weird, but true, honest, I try to be the best mom like that but it no longer works. Ezra has sworn off sweets, they are not good for you he says, Andrew does not care for them, Al hates chocolate.......I know, who hates chocolate and Adelys, picky, she may and she may not..............SOOOOOOO, I gues you will just have to save some for me!!!! (:
ReplyDeleteNot good for you? I beg to differ....... :)
DeleteYou crack me up. I am still laughing about the parrot. But they are pretty.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up for good scores at the library and chocolate of all sorts.
Can you bring me some pretzels?? Ill have to look into those books. I have great plans of reading wonderful stories to my boys once their attention span reaches past ten pages.
ReplyDeleteEverything sounds so lovely. A fun packed weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun weekend! Those pretzels look amazing! I love how you want your kids to remember you for your awesome, homemade, baked goods! Oh, and I love your comment about the kids making a Christmas list for the next ten years after visiting the mall toy store. My son is on this kick of pointing out everything he wants both at the store and on TV. I told him to ask the Easter Bunny. Is that wrong?! Good times!
ReplyDeleteI think it is beyond cool that you discovered that book on your own long before the movie was a whisper. I LOVED that movie when I saw it! I also adore hearing about all the things you do with and for the kids!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThose pretzels look delicious!
I loved the "Hugo" when I saw it. I'm glad you found another book to enjoy!
I find it so difficult to buy books. My town library is maybe a mile from my house and I just can't spend the money on something I will read once. If it is a book I will share, I might buy it.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I go to the library I always feel like a kid in a candy shop! And all the candy is FREE!!!!!!
DeleteYou saw a DOUBLE rainbow! I love those.
ReplyDeleteThose pretzels look amazing. Recipe, please?
Wow, the Mississippi mud cake? Looks so yummy!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love that you read that huge book with your kids. I bet they will remember that and if not- you will. I always loved when my Mom read to me as a kid and I know that is why I love reading now.
It sounds and looks like a crazy awesome weekend! LOVE that you saw a rainbow. And made all this awesome food!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a weekend! One of my faves...kids made their Christmas list for the next 10 years :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a weekend!
Oh, that sounds great! I needed a new book to read. And I love that you saw a rainbow running-- how fun!
ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds like a busy and awesome weekend. How do you have the energy to do so much? I can barely keep up with my sole toddler..Must do some baking, you have a good point about creating memories :)
ReplyDeleteGet out of my head! I was just thinking last night that I hope all of the baked goods I make for my kids gives them delightful memories in the future.
ReplyDeleteI want them to think that everything tastes better homemade AND that no one cooks as good as mom (that is for any girl that would try to marry my boys...what can I say I am a little protective).
Your pretzels are delicious looking and how funny that Glenn was the one who was able to sneak in a nap.
I hope you have a great day Marie!
Seriously Rachel I worry about that now. Will Ethan's future wife cook for him? I hope against hope she does and if not I hope she's willing to learn. Men are simple and just need a few things. A good homemade meal, I feel, is one of them :)
DeleteFigures it would be Glen who got to take a nap! I bet he was just "exhausted" after the weekend, too, right? That's what Cory always says and I'm wondering exactly how taxing it must be to sit on the couch and watch soccer games for six hours on Saturday... ;o)
ReplyDeleteMississippi Mud Cake...mmmmm. I've never had it, but it looks worth the stomachache later.
Looks like you had an amazing weekend! Yummy Prezels, an it makes me sad that you didn't have great friends to enjoy the journey of your teen years. While I didn't have a ton of best buds, I still have friends that I hang with from High School.
ReplyDeleteI made my closest friend (Shauna Klippel!) 12 years ago when our oldest were just babies. It's never too late to make a best friend :) But it would have been nice if my mom was a little more pro-active in that department when I was a kid.
DeleteLooks like a lovely weekend to me! Plus those pretzels look amazing... you're making me hungry!
ReplyDeleteThe parrot part! Oh how it made me laugh. My parents got us a parrot when I was little, although it was much smaller, because we begged nonstop. It was the worst. pet. ever. So loud and crazy, but we loved him all the same! I still would never advise ANYONE to get a parrot.
ReplyDeleteThe Mississipi mud cake, looks toooo good! I like your reason for cooking. And I'm sure your kids will always look forward to your cooking, no matter what age they are.
ReplyDeletei'm craving pretzels now!!
ReplyDeleteI really love pretzels...never tried to make them before though.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on the books...I have a problem buying books a full-price thanks to Amazon. And now I actually just think that buying books is a waste of money, much rather keep going to the library!
That last pic made me laugh. Looks familiar just a different husband....
