Just like Jessica Fletcher
I fell in love with food blogs a few years ago. Growing up I would pour over cookbooks in the library. I would take them home and read them the way kids devour Harry Potter these days. I would make copies of pages, hand write recipes, anything to make sure that one day I too would be able to recreate 'Pumpkin Cheesecake with a Gingersnap Crust & a bittersweet chocolate sauce'.
Once I even left a pile of cookbooks (and maybe a hundred photocopied recipes) at a place I was temping as a receptionist (back in the day when all you needed to do was answer & transfer phone calls, no silly computer skills necessary or clearly I wouldn't have gotten the job). After the job ended I had to sneak back into work to get the cookbooks & all of the (possibly illegally) photocopied recipes. All those Murder She Wrote & Perry Mason episodes I watched as a kid sure came in handy.
I never utilized the internet when it first came out. I was too busy changing diapers & playing at the park. Once Ethan started school though one of my goals was to start a blog. I envisioned a food blog because I cook a lot & I love food.
Upon starting my blog I realized pretty quickly that it couldn't be a food blog. Who wants pictures of chocolate chip cookies with raw chicken and kids homework in the background? Who wants to look at empty dish after empty dish because I keep forgetting to take pictures of the dishes I made? And who has the patience to photograph food when all I seem to want is to eat it?
I am a true food lover because my food must be eaten ASAP and not treated like a pawn to be photographed. That's what I tell myself to make me feel better. It works.
So this blog is just the random happy, confusing, sweet, scary, heartbreaking moments of my life. Basically it's pictures of my kids. And Brutus. And delicious food if I can bear to wait 2 seconds to snap a picture before devouring it.
Here is a sweet picture I snapped Sunday morning as we were all getting ready for church. Glenn teaching Ethan how to tie his church shoes. He is 6 years old but because his mother buys him nothing but sandals, velcro sneakers & Ugg boots, he has never needed to learn to tie his own shoes. His sisters would have you know that this mother also completely babies him. She sounds like the worst!
In honor of the great food I will never photograph, here are some food blogs who do a great job.

Marie, I like your post. I'm glad you blog about your everyday happenings and not just food. Although, I love your food and am excited to see any of your recipes and have tried all of them. So far, the family favorites are the soups you post and the beef stew posted awhile back. By the way there is a slow cooker recipe on "The Girl who Ate Everything" for Chicken Caesar sandwiches-which I thought Emry would love! Ya know, since when she visited all she ate were Caesar Salads! Love you, Shauna
ReplyDeleteLooks tasty! Kinda makes me want a nice slice of carrot cake though. :)
ReplyDeleteThe bread looks yummy and once in awhile food is great. Your blog is so happy and positive. It is what it is. We should all aspire to be who and what we are. You do a great job of it, Marie!
ReplyDeleteI could never be a food blogger either because a. I am a terrible cook, and b. I am not really interested in eating! I just eat to not be hungry and that's that.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, just the way it is!
I think you do a great job, Marie. I enjoy seeing how you and your family are doing and to be honest, if you didn't post about food once in a while I never would have found your blog! (BTW--my popcorn came out a little browner and crunchier than I remember when you made it for us for our Vegas couples trip... should I lessen the cooking time?)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog Marie- I love a little bit of everything, it is perfect! And I'm glad to know Ethan doesn't know how to tie shoes...because I don't think Noah will ever learn...I also only buy slip on shoes for him- it's just so quick and easy!
ReplyDeleteI love the theme of your blog :) So realistic and appealing!
