In the Kitchen

Most people that know me think I am the best cook in the world.  Ummm, just because I talk about food all day and read about food and dream about it and consider grocery shopping fun and can happily spend all day in the kitchen, and bake and cook more than anyone you know (it's all relative), does not an awesome cook make.

What it makes is a neurotic, obsessed weirdo with not a lot of friends.  Hey, that does describe me.  But lest anyone think I've mastered anything, let's take a look at what I've made this week.

Chicken with tomato herb pan sauce. This dish was AWESOME. (I've lived in CA my whole life so awesome is perfectly acceptable vocab).  I got the recipe HERE and I highly recommend it.

But I also made a few loaves of bread which ended up needing and additional 2.5 cups of flour.  No wonder bread scares people off, you have to be somewhat brave and know what you're doing.  2.5 is a lot of flour, maybe I added too much liquid.  Not sure what happened but the end result was delicious.  A few years ago I wised up and bought a food scale and now weigh everything because of how many times I've lost count of cups.  I learned I wasn't smart enough to talk on the phone and measure out ingredients simultaneously.

I made pumpkin snickerdoodle bars.  Mine turned out nothing like THIS picture.  Mine had a very distinct crust layer and cheesecake layer, and I had to bake them for almost 50 minutes.  Didn't get a pic because they were gone pretty fast.

I made chicken noodle soup and forgot about the veggies and threw them in at the last minute.  Nothing like soup with crunchy veggies.

I made granola.  You really can't mess up granola.  I made it without a recipe because in my life, that's considered living on the edge.

I made a big ol' batch of rice pudding for the kiddos.  I got sidetracked and almost let it boil over, but luckily there was an "emergency" downstairs and passing the kitchen I remembered it was there.

I was probably doing something important like taking a picture of my new favorite headband that I got at the dollar store.

What??  Finding something at the dollar store that isn't in the garbage by the end of the night is totally noteworthy.

  1. Marie, some times you are just Hysterical!! I just came back to a trip from 3 dollar stores and Aldi's which is a discount grocery store that I don't think they have out West :-(. Anyway got lots of cool things. Oh yeah, your food looks great (even the chicken dish and I'm a veggie!) and you're not weird. I do a lot of the same things, just without the 3 little ones!!

  2. Marie, thank you so much for posting this!! I don't know why but it's so hard to find tried and true chicken dishes that are healthy and taste good. I am having the missionaries over tonight. I'm going to the store right now. I'm making this tonight. And by the way, you are the best cook I know. For anyone that is reading this, she is. I have never made anything that she has suggested that turned out poorly, tasteless or bad. In fact, it's always the best!!! (aka..chicken curry, salmon w/ mango salsa, whole wheat bread, the list goes on). And if you have ever had the privilege of cooking with her (particularly baking) you will see just how magic her hands are. She makes these orange rolls that I too make and I make them well only because she did it with me. If any of you have a chance to get to her house and bake with her-do it!!!! I could just watch her cook all day.....and I have. Love-to the best cook...Shauna

  4. I would need a recipe for granola, and I would probably still mess it up.

  6. Hey, I made the chicken, it's a new family favorite. Everyone loved it. Thanks again. My ward is doing a recipe book, I'm going to submit this for sure, because it's good and easy! By the way I love your picture of the chicken, it's better than all the others I saw; just my opinion. Love you-Shauna
