Glenn & I gave Lila tickets to 'Wicked' for her birthday. We also gave my Mom a ticket for Christmas. Glenn, Emry & I have all seen it and fell under it's spell so one by one we're forcing everyone we love to go.
Saturday morning Emry, Lila, my Mom & I settled in for the 90 mile drive to L.A. First stop was the ultra posh outdoor mall 'The Grove'. They have such nice bathrooms they actually have attendants there you tip. Since my girls wanted to feel rich and famous they left a buck on the tray. Over the top I know.
My cousin Emerald met us for lunch. She lives in the Hollywood hills, is a model, has a fabulous figure, long legs, beautiful wardrobe, blond hair and had just come from yoga. Totally L.A.
I must say she is one of the sweetest girls you'll ever meet. Might have something to do with the fact that she was raised in Utah and not L.A. Just a guess.
Oh my gosh my lunch was so good!!!! There is a big open Farmer's Market at 'The Grove' and I opted for Brazilian BBQ. Lila had a frozen lemonade (her stomach was quesy) Mom & Emry had tacos, Emerald had a pastrami sandwich and I had black beans, squash, fried plantains, a piece of fried yucca & a salad with garlic chicken, beets, eggplant, tomato, broccoli and some pineapple for dessert. DELICIOUS!
American Girl. We love this store. My girls don't have the dolls as there is no way I can bring myself to spend over $100 on those precious dolls. But it is so fun to visit.
Okay I actually lied. I would totally drop tons of cash here on all the adorable clothes and furniture, but I kinda like having a roof over my head.
After dropping my Mom and Lila off at the Pantages Theatre, Emry & I hit the streets to kill 3 hours. I wanted to hit up the L.A. thrift stores but Emry was having none of that. Hollywood Boulevard was calling her name.
She wanted to take a picture with this Transformer because she knew Ethan would think it was cool.
Around this time with all the people, performers and the crazy L.A. vibe, Emry & I started to get a little silly ourselves.
Love, love, love Julie Andrews. The Sound of Music is one of our all time favorites. Emry also had to give some love to Jack Sparrow.
I had to pay tribute to one of my favorites. And how crazy is this - between getting home from L.A. and leaving to spend New Years at our friends, I turned on Dick Clark's New Years Rock'in Eve for literally 2 minutes to see - Lionel Richie! Crazy!!! Twice in one day!!!
Granted one was just his name & the other a short clip on T.V., but Lionel is all sorts of awesomeness!
Against my better judgment I have let Emry check out those huge, gross Ripley's Believe It or Not books from the library. They unfortunately come out with a new one every year. She is so into those books. She sees the museums every time we go to a big city and has always wanted to go.
Since it was just the two of us I decided it was a good time to fulfill one of her life's dreams.
Apparently Asians do a lot of crazy stuff because they were featured prominently in this museum.
Artwork of Jimmi Hendrix made soley of guitar picks.
A prom dress made entirely of Starburst wrappers. It took a very dedicated mother 6 years to make this, along with the shoes, vest & accessories. I think it's kind of cool. No longer am I throwing away my bags from flax and wheat. Emry is in for a great surprise dontcha think?
This was the best part. There was this room where they played club music and you could dance in front of a screen that showed different shadows of you.
This pic is of Emry (x 2) but after a few minutes I couldn't take it and had to bust a move. I started out wimpy but soon was jumping around not caring how many people were walking by.
I guess those street performers got into our head.
We had 10 minutes to wait for Lila and my Mom so we did what any normal mother/daughter would do, took tons of self portraits. This is L.A. after all, it's preferable to be self-absorbed.
Oh yeah, the reason we came. My mom and Lila thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Upon arriving home I put a Disney movie on for the kids so Glenn & I could go to a friends. It should surprise no one that we came home around 11:15 and I promptly fell asleep while the kids and Glenn held out to see the ball drop.
Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That whole day looks like so much fun!!! It has been way too long since I spent a day playing tourist in LA. I would love to see Wicked plus do all of the stuff you did, especially going to The Grove!
ReplyDeleteWow I hope to visit LA and visit the hall of fame. Love the photos. Seems so much fun.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year
Oh my gosh...you are so funny! Your writing cracks me up. I loved all the commentary peppered throughout your visit to LA.
ReplyDeleteWe love California...I've only been 3 times...but that's 3 times more than most mid-westerners! :) And I too have a niece that models. Ashley is 6'1" and a junior in high school. She plays select volleyball and does dress modeling on the side for some cute, tiny boutiques. Right now, her parents are pushing her towards college and volleyball scholarship as the scouts are checking her out...but who knows what will happen once she gets to Florida or California...
Would love to see Wicked. Obviously, being Kansans, we are huge Wizard of Oz fans. :)
Love the self portraits. You are such a fun momma! I hope to be like that with my own kiddos! Oh and that Brazilian bbq looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteYour LA trip sounds so amazing! What fun! I loved Wicked the book (okay, AND the American Girl books), but have never seen the play/musical. And six years to make a dress?? I don't think I have the dedication to start anything that's going to take me six years to finish...especially a dress for a one-night event.
ReplyDeleteI read most of the American Girl books to my girls when they were younger and I loved them too, such sweet and good messages. Wicked the play is loosely based on the book, I've heard the book is much darker, the play is upbeat, positive and has a great message of friendship and acceptance.
ReplyDeleteMan, these pictures really make me want to visit Cali! Also...you should definitely make your daughter the recycled prom dress :-)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great day! Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had an amazing time!! The food looks/sounds amazing!! A wonderful start to a New Year!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful time! As always, you and the little ones look like you're having a great time. Happy New Year, Marie!!
ReplyDeleteI saw Wicked and loved it too. What a sweet gift you gave them! And I love that you caved and went to Ripley's for her. It looks like you had a great time, and I adore your silly ways!
ReplyDeleteI was in LA last May and I missed Johnny Depp's star so I'm totally living vicariously at this moment through your daughter. I adore that man.
Happy New Year!
Looks like so much fun! I'm dying to see Wicked

ReplyDeleteYou all seem like you could have a good time anywhere, but that looks like an especially fun trip! Your photos were so fun! I love the starburst dress. I wonder if they ate all those starbursts? And your lunch looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see Wicked. My kids used to listen to that "Popular" song again and again. :)
Looks like you all had a fabulous time!!!!!! Wish I coulda been there with you all!!!! Your food looked AMAZING! YUM!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful trip! Wicked is one of my favorite broadway shows, hands down! Your family is beautiful, and of course I love your daughter's name!!
ReplyDeleteI liked American Girl dolls before they were cool! Maybe Ben will take me to the store...
ReplyDeleteMy son goes to college in LA and I have now been maybe 3 times but not done much shopping or touristy stuff. Yet!
ReplyDeleteHa- my eyes went RIGHT to the plantains in your lunch. :)
ReplyDeleteI've never been to LA, but your photos make me very interested to check it out! And it would be pretty cool to see the walk of fame (I love Lionel!!).
Wicked is awesome. I saw it last summer in DC and had no idea what to expect- didn't know a thing about the plot. It is so clever and funny and the music is great. What a fun day for all of you!
I love how you both rocked the horizontal stripes and STILL managed to look a size zero. I'm going to go ahead and say some of the nicest peeps I have EVER met have been from Utah. With a name like Emerald how could she NOT look fab AFTER yoga and be a model? Just wouldn't be right.
ReplyDeletethe grove is an awesome shopping place for sure! what a great la trip! it is always fun people watching at the avenue of the stars. i love how both you and your daughter rocked the stripes
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day! I've always wanted to see the Hollywood stars!Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had so much fun! I enjoyed all the pics and now want to see Wicked!! I love the ticket idea for Christmas/birthdays. It's so nice to go do/watch something together. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI love going to The Grove... every time I've gone I've seen someone [somewhat] famous - did you see anyone? I'm seeing Wicked for the second time at the Pantages on Friday with some of the girls. I started listening to the soundtrack again today. This time I've got better seats, and I'm excited to see it from a different vantage point (last time was mezzanine, this time orchestra). Perhaps we'll stop at The Grove on our way up.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous day! The pictures are great! I love the comment about how your cousin was raised in Utah and not LA- too funny. Wicked is amazing, I saw it in NY a couple of years ago, you will love no doubt!! You look great Marie- love your jeggings/boots and striped top!
ReplyDeletelooks like so much fun! great pictures!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you were at the Grove! I go there all the time...I would have met you. Except that I'm obviously out of town so that would have been impossible. Next time for sure.
ReplyDeleteAnd Emerald, if you are reading this, I love your name!
Ameena I totally thought of you! But alas you were in Paris, whatever!
