Cracks

                                                                                           February 1996

Just a group of friends hanging out in the hot tub watching our kids cause a ruckus in the pool.  The kids are on top of each other, throwing balls, yelling and of course running all around the slick pool.  There's really no reason to tell them not to run.  If they don't stop running after being told a hundred times, chances are they won't listen at one hundred and one.  When it comes to the pool there is no such thing as obedience, even at home it's a little iffy.

So back to us.  We're talking about the guys (there's about a dozen who attend) upcoming yearly surfing trip to Mexico where they'll be gone a week.  Will I miss Glenn?  "No", I say, "he's around too much as it is".

Too honest?  Is this marriage and couple who most describe as "perfect" a sham?

I can't be bothered with thinking too much into it, I have 3 semi-obedient kids to care for after all.  But it's true, I won't miss my husband.  I actually love it when he's gone.  There's a different vibe in the house.  There are no expectations that dinner will be anything other than grilled cheese, smoothies or leftovers.   The kids can snuggle in my bed for an all night reading marathon.  I can wear the same outfit 7 days in a row instead of putting forth some effort and changing it up on day 3.  I can watch 'The View' without being shamed.

Plus, I am completely psyched for Glenn.  I am pretty sure the love he has for surfing rivals the love he has for me.  I think I win out, but I wouldn't bet money on it or anything.

  1. It's not fair that you don't look much different now than you did in 1996!! How dare you?! ;-) Happy for Glenn that he gets to do something he loves!

  2. I always love it when my husband goes away for a little trip. I love having the bed to myself:) And eating whatever I want whenever I want. And I love that absence makes the heart grow fonder and we get to reunite when he comes home. BUT, he's talking about hiking the Pacific Coast Trail for 6 months and that would be wayyyyy too long!

    1. Exactly! I love snuggling in bed with frozen yogurt and a good book. Not like I couldn't do that with Glenn around, but it's just fun.

Wow, that is a long trip! Is he trying to talk you into going or is it a guys trip. I hate camping but that sounds like a super adventure.

  3. Everyone needs a little solo time! Nothing wrong with enjoying it. Or with enjoying grilled cheese for dinner every night...

  4. Thank you!!!! I am so glad I'm not the only one!!! :o) I enjoy the one-on-one time having Cory gone allows me with Lexie. We normally end up reading in my bed, too, and having cereal for dinner because it's both of our favorites. And I sorta enjoy having the whole bed to myself. ;o) Is that selfish?

That picture from 1996 could *almost* be taken 2012. Ya'll haven't changed much. Only Glenn's oversized polo gives it away. ;o)

    1. Unfortunately all 3 of my kids want to 'spend the night' in my bed. It's fun but I do enjoy a whole bed to myself.

    1. I just folded Glenn's laundry & now I don't now what to do with it. Must I put it away as well? Enjoy the messy home. Shuana's coming for a visit today for a few days so no messy house for me. Must clean ASAP. I want her to think it's effortless of course:)

  6. Sounds like he's going on a fun guys trip. And I know the feeling of not missing the man while he's gone. I like the rare trips my husband takes out of town without me. It's different at home and it's a nice change sometimes.

  7. Definitely something I need. It is so much quieter when Himself is away!

  8. If you can't make it with somebody, you can't make it. If you can't make it without somebody, you can't make it!

    You are making it :-)

  9. Seriously that's what a marriage is all about. Enjoying each other and enjoying time for yourselves. And being incredibly happy in both situations. Love that photo of you two.

  10. I am with you! If you were really lucky, the kids would be going too :) Im going back East for 2 weeks without hubs and I think we are both looking forward to it. He can watch sportscenter, not make the bed, sleep in and not listen to me complain about the boys not napping, while I can let my mom take care of the kids while I sit by her pool. I think we all need that space!

    1. I definitely appreciated the break from the kids when they were younger but now that they are big and in school it's not a big deal. My best friend is coming for a visit tonight for a few days and we have plenty of time to do fun stuff during the day and if needs be Emry will watch the other 2 at night.

    1. We do, although this year it's just my best friend and me. Due to babies, moves, losing touch, etc. it's just us 2 now, which is perfect.

  12. I know exactly what you're talking about when you say you like when he's gone. I've always felt the same way. There's just something freeing about it, and by the time they get back you're good and ready anyhow, right?

    1. No. Just kidding, of course. You enjoy someone more when there's an absence. I could never go without him for too long:)

  13. I love it when my husband goes out of town too! I let the dishes go, eat toast for dinner, and watch girlie tv like it is going out of style!

  14. I totally get this. I love doing whatever I want with my time in the evenings, but I'm always glad to see Mike come home, too.

Very jealous of your gorgeous high ceilings! I can touch ours!!!

  15. I am the same way! Chris takes two or three yearly trips with his buddies to do amazing things and I get so excited for him. I also love that there is one last person to clean up after and care for! I love the control of the remote. I love easy, fast dinners. My girls and I could eat salad every night...Chris, not so much!
Hope Glenn has a great time and you enjoy yourself too!

  16. My guy always says he enjoys having the house all to himself when the girls and I are away..... sounds like both of you are winning out in the above scenario. Enjoy!

  17. I'm the opposite, I love it when he's home n we rarely like to be apart, not unless he's the one home n I'm off traveling. Haha.. But that's not happened yet.

  18. I hear you on this one - when Marcus leaves, I LOVE having a few girl-days to just eat what I call Single Girl Food (because like yours, my husband is unable to feed himself other than take out or canned soup) and keep my own hours. When he comes home, we're both SO excited to see one another again. I think this is healthy.

  19. you guys definitely seem like you have a good, happy marriage. time apart is healthy! and I'm in for smoothies and cereals for dinner.

  20. I love that first picture Marie! Yep, I agree that separation sometimes makes the marriage stronger!

  21. I remember you mentioned something about this on my blog...I love that you are so honest! Time apart never hurt my relationship either. If anything it makes me happy to have a break in the kitchen and cleaning up the house (e.g. after Ali!).

And I totally agree...love the vibe when it's just me and Maya!

  22. I love that you stated something so obviously needed, sometimes we have to be independent, even if for only a week.. so says the single girl.

  23. You both are so cute! Time apart is good.

  24. I think it's healthy to value independence! I like being able to do and eat whatever I want when Ben's gone!

  25. No - never too honest. Absence DOES make the heart grown fonder! I know I am at the beginning of this thing called marriage. But I do know that one! :)

  26. I feel the same way when my husband goes out of town, sometimes it's just nice to have the space to yourself and drop the expectations.

  27. Everyone needs a little separation every now and then...it makes the heart grow fonder and makes you appreciate what you have at home :)

  28. It's nice to have space to be stinky, but I REALLY miss Q when he's gone. And you are soooooooooooooo right about the food. Just easier!

  29. They say that "absence makes the heart grow fonder" but I think it is just right for both parties to take a break.
