When you wish upon a Star............

Lila Glenn turned 10 and a pink party was in order.  She had about a dozen friends over for pink food including pink grilled cheese sandwiches, pink popcorn (it's not a celebration if there's not popcorn!) some crafts & a doll fashion show.

I couldn't have done this party without Emry and her friends.  They decorated, learned how to do the craft on youtube an hour before the party started, made awards and were in charge of judging the fashion show.  They were so cute and interviewed each girl and asked about all their dolls favorite things and talents.  Of course each girl got their own award fitting to their doll.  Utterly Adorable.

Lila sporting the hat and boots she got as gifts, & the necklace craft we made.

As much as I love the kid parties, I was really excited for the next night when all Lila's adult friends, who happen to be my friends :), came over for a dinner party.  This Raspberry Truffle Cake was so rich and decadent.  I guess I take after my mom in that I made enough food to feed an army.  Guess I won't have to cook all week :)

Clockwise from left - My parents and Lila - Katelyn Downs, Emry, & Maddie Dixon - The Dixons, he is the Bishop of our ward and we love their family - Jeannette & our friend Sarah.
The moment I've been waiting six weeks for (ever since it arrived in the mail).  Honestly I've never been more excited to give anyone a gift than I was this doll to Lila. The American Girl Caroline doll.  She is absolutely beautiful.  Ethan & Emry gave her the set of Caroline books and my parents gave her an outfit.  That hat - it kills me, it is beyond words precious.

It truly is more blessed to give than to receive as seeing Lila's reaction to her doll was more fun for me than anything and everything I've ever received combined.

Glenn & I are very aware of not spoiling the kids.  Of teaching them how to work hard and be responsible.  Making sure they are considerate of others needs and not just thinking of themselves.  That school is a priority.  But sometimes ............sometimes it is breathtakingly beautiful to throw caution to the wind and make all your child's dreams come true.  To get them the one thing they've been wanting for 4 years.  To throw fairy dust up in the air and witness the magic it creates as it falls down all around them and takes their breath away.

Caroline had 4 outfit changes that night.  A few hairdo experiments.  Dozens of hugs.  And if a doll could feel loved (which I believe they can) then she must have felt utterly adored.  I watched Emry & Lila kneeling in front of the doll crib for a good 10 minutes tucking her in.  Putting another doll next to her so they could sleep together.  Making sure the blanket was perfect.  Tucking in her pet owl as well.  Emry is probably as excited as I am for Lila.  They both went to bed talking about all they would do with her the next day.

Glenn & I take parenting very seriously, but as well as all the hard work that goes into these kids, thankfully our job also includes making sure they have enchanted memories like these that will hopefully stay in their minds forever.

    1. The cake was what I was most nervous about for sure. It was a 2-day project and weighed about 20 pounds, no joke it was one serious cake. I'll for sure make the cake, raspberry filling and glaze again but would tweak the ganache and raspberry frosting. The cake was to die for, it was delicious. Wish you were all here. It was certainly a busy in the kitchen weekend.

  3. Haahaha! I know c'mon Gwyneth give the lady that your named after some credit here!!!

Hey I'm back because I looked at the pictures more closely. A couple of things:

Those cup cakes are precious. Did you buy the paper and flags or make them?

Second, that cake is crazy Marie. You did a great job. I just looked at the recipe, very involved. What do you think? Worth making? It looks awesome. I like the way your cake looks better than the original. The pink frosting on yours turned out more shabby chic. :)

And I love how you strung up pictures of the birthday girl. So cute. All of it. Love,

    1. I bought the holders and flags in a pack at Marshall's, totally random. The cake is definitely worth it but I'll tell you what I'd do when I make it again. Half the cake portion of the recipe and make it in 2 pans (it makes tons!). Then I would just serve slices of the cake with the raspberry sauce, fresh whipped cream, and the chocolate glaze drizzled over the whole thing. Easy just like that.

Lots of people LOVE buttercream, I am just not one of them. But I wanted to try the frosting as it is a type of Italian meringue buttercream and I've heard it's divine but honestly I could put that much butter to much better use:)

    1. You & me both. I had a best friend from 1st to 5th grade & one day she dropped me, just like that, I cried for months & was never close to another girl until I was 27 and met Shauna.
As a parent I am realizing how much control you have with choosing your kids friends, what friendships you help foster & what ones you kind of veer away from. I am very pro-active in taking my kids to their friends, taking them to the movies or yogurt or the park.
I know what it's like not to have those friendships so I do the work with and for them when it comes to helping them nurture those friendships.

  10. You know what? I do the same thing...I try to make sure that Maya isn't spoiled. Not sure how successful I am but I try.

But sometimes there is nothing like getting them something extraordinary!

Gorgeous pictures...what a cute party. She'll remember this forever.

  11. Aww this actually made me tear up! So cute! Wow! A barbie fashion show and how did you make pink grilled cheese sandwiches? I'm really annoyed with kids nowadays getting things like laptops/mp3s/other electronics for their birthdays- so unnecessary! A party like this for sure will be much more meaningful and memorable.

    1. Agreed. There's plenty of time for all that when they're older. Now is their time to be a kid, play and just be young and free while it lasts.

  15. Aw, your daughter is getting so grown up already! I remember when I got Hannah her American doll. She was turning 8, and I told her we were going to Chicago for the day. She had no idea we were going there, and when we got in front of the store I asked "do you want to go in?" she said "okay, but just to look!"

Imagine her surprise when I told her she could pick one out and bring it home. She named her Callie and my Mom made all her clothes. And now Hannah will be 21 on her next birthday - the time really does fly!

  16. That last picture melts my heart. What a special moment. I'll never forget my first American girl doll (Molly) and how much I loved her. My mom still has all the books, clothes and accessories at her farm house just waiting for that granddaughter :) Happy birthday Lila!

  21. I want to know more about this pink grilled cheese thing. There are no pictures, so I'm having a hard time picturing what's pink about it.
We're into big birthday celebrations here--we used to joke that my grandma thought her birthday was a national holiday.

    1. That was the opposite of us, we barely celebrated birthdays, Christmas however was always so special. So there's 2 ways to do the grilled cheese. 1. Make bread and tint it pink with dye or 2. tint the butter w/ dye and use white bread. I used the second method and it worked but not fantastic. It made the butter a little to liquid-y, if I had thought it out beforehand I would have just made some pink bread.

    2. Method 2 would be a lot quicker if you had a spontaneous desire for pink grilled cheese, but I can see how method 1 would be better if you planned ahead. Hmm, I think I'll have to tuck the idea of colored bread away in my bag of tricks for someday when my daughter is old enough to enjoy it.

  26. Oh Marie your words are so on spot, to throw caution to the wind and make your childs dreams come true is definitely one of the perks of being a parent. Both parties look like such fun, I would love to be a fly on the wall.

  27. Oh the American Girl dolls are such a special treat and Lila looks utterly happy to have received her Caroline doll (her doppelganger).
I love the pink party theme and the raspberry cake for the adult party. What a fantastic and joyful time for you all.

Thanks so much for sharing and I love how you arranged the pictures on today's post (I am so jealous as I can't figure that stuff out).

    Have a blessed day!
