My kids have had the last 17 days off from school. 17!!!!!!! You'd think we'd fit in a whole bunch of fun, exciting activities. The reality is we just enjoyed doing a whole bunch of nothing.
We slept in - every morning. We stayed up late - every night. We ate breakfast while reading Garfield books. We hurried and got chores out of the way so we could all snuggle under the blankets and watch a few episodes of "Little House on the Prairie". We played Uno Attack and had to assure Ethan every time that we weren't cheating.
We went on bike rides to the park where we played in the sand for hours and I was reminded of all the years spent at the park when they were little. We went through a Costco size tin of Starbucks Hot Chocolate. We read all 400 pages of 'Life of Pi' and cried. We went thrifting and got Lila a quilt for her bed (above). (I wish the person who made this quilt would read this and know how ecstatic I was in finding this for $5, that I love it, appreciate it, and will take good care of it)
We went to Chuck E Cheez where I spent 20 bucks on tokens and zero on food. We went and saw 'Life of Pi' at the movies where I cried again. I heard my daughter tell a friend the book was better and that made me cry yet again that she appreciated all the pages upon pages of detail in the book. We went swimming thanks to a year round heated community pool. I taught Emry the basics of soup-making.
We spent time together and today they are back at school.
It's not as fun as when they're here.
You are such a fun loving and energetic momma. I love how involved you are with your kids. I hope to be the same!!

I am so jealous of all your time off! My kids got 6 days off - for 10 days off total. Not enough time!
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is stunning. I can't believe they sold it for $5, but I'm glad it found a good home.
I always joke it's because we live in California and play is just as important as school that we have so many days off (in reality it's because of our greedy, corrupt politicians). It doesn't bother me too bad though because I love doing home-schooling here and there, just not full time.
DeleteI miss my kids already too...boring without them. I cried like a baby during Life of Pi as well. I'll have to make sure to read the book. Can't wait to see you in 11 days!
ReplyDeleteThe countdown is on!!!!!!! Can't wait to get all crazy with you all.
DeleteOnly 5 more months until summer vacation :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the movie, Life of Pi. But I haven't had a chance yet to read the book. I'm sure it's amazing as well. I think my favorite part about the movie was how beautiful it was. I haven't seen an artistic style movie like that one in a long time. They did such a great job with that whale scene and the island with the meercats!
ReplyDeleteIt was so breathtaking. I knew my kids would appreciate it much more if they had a connection, that is why we always read the books before seeing the movies. The book went seriously into such detail. His ordeal was so great it was a lesson in gratitude for sure.
DeleteYour kids are going to look back on their childhood with unbelievably warm memories!
ReplyDeleteSeventeen days!!! Whoa! So happy you enjoy your children and vice versa
ReplyDeleteWow that's a lot of time to spend with your kids. I remember one summer when my mom wasn't working and I spent a lot of time with her. Going to the park, going swimming, watching some TV, cooking and so forth. I really miss those days now, they were so precious :) Glad you enjoyed the time with your kids ^^
ReplyDeleteDear Marie!!! I missed your Christmas post! I haven't been on the computer at all. Super busy and then sick. I am so thrilled that you had time to spend with your children like this. Hey, so fun reading the book! Glad you loved it, it's amazing. Very unique book. Haven't seen the movie yet. Love the quilt. How long did it take to find? It's great, it's what I pictured you would be looking for. Great find. Miss you and love you.
ReplyDeleteI left a comment on your last post. Love you,

Kalen got clothes and books. Just what he asked for. Kirk also got him some games. My kids are nerds Marie, totally. They do school, jump, break for a couple of games together, read, play games again. They looooove games. Kalen also got an ipad paid for by the charter school. He uses it to do some really neat science lessons and other school related things that is speciifc to only the ipad. They just came out with some really comprehensive science, history, math cirriculum type stuff. Kirk has been doing it with them for a few months a few nights a week after we read in the evenings. It's really great, really cool features for learning. Anyhow, he likes it.
ReplyDeleteSounds absolutely perfect Marie! My husband tried to take the girls to see "Life of Pi" here in Switzerland and was told that the children have to be 10 years or older to attend? Is it scary? Funny note too, Marlowe keeps saying she wants to go see "Life of Cake"..... oh, what kids will say! Enjoy your peace and quiet today.
ReplyDeleteLife of Cake, so cute. There are some scary parts but only as far as animals being animals, roaring and such. My 7 year old loved it, but then again after the lengthy book they were super excited to see the movie.
DeleteNormally I don't like government etc. imposing restrictions, but after seeing far too many little kids in R movies (little like 6 & 7!!!!) I wish the movies here would implement those rules as well.
I love this post. It's so... Warm.
ReplyDeleteAww, sounds like a perfect holiday for all of you! And everything's better when Garfield is involved :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great 17 days! :) I'm so glad you were able to spend quality time with eachother. I hope these next few days are smooth and easy as you slide back into your routines.

ReplyDeleteSounds lovely! We went back to school this week too ~ though it's just around our kitchen table ;) There is something so refreshing about a break.
ReplyDeleteWow 17 is a lot of days!!!!
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy with my kids but they do make me insane at times!!!!

Such a beautiful and relaxed way of spending the Holidays!! I loved the movie - Life of Pi. I had read the book many years back but couldn't finish it. Felt disjointed and I couldnt connect with the characters. It felt too fantastical for me to go on. Maybe I should pick up the book now cause I really loved the movie so much
ReplyDeleteWe did a stay at home vacation with the kids as well. It was fantastic to just enjoy each others company and cooking our meals together (the kids don't usually get involved with them).
ReplyDeleteI hope the soup making went well, that is a useful item to know how to make.
I'm sorry the kids had to go back to school...but summer break will be here before you know it :)
I think that's the best kind of vacation. I hope I'm as good of a mom as you...if I ever get pregnant. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't sound like nothing to me, sounds like the perfect holiday!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lucky find of that quilt!! My daughters first babysitter - Hannah was with her from the age of six weeks to six years old, made a quilt out of all the hands of the kids that were at the day care - it was so sweet, and Hannah is almost 21 and still has it on her bed. :D
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!
Oh I love it. I am seriously going to learn to sew quilts if it takes me the next 40 years, I just love them so much.
DeleteWonderful post, Marie! I love Emry telling her friend that the book was better. It usually is and I love that she sees that. What great kids you have. Of course they have a great Mom, too! ;-)
