Thrift Finds

For a few months now I've been looking for new chairs for my dining room.  Definitely a want, not a need.  Whenever I hit the thrift stores I'll check the furniture and see if there are any I like for a good deal.  When looking for Lila's career day costume last week I saw this pair for $100 each.  I loved them and they were in almost perfect condition, exactly what I was looking for, but the price was too steep.

Upon leaving the store there was a big sign advertising that the upcoming Friday everything in the store was 1/2 off.  Music to my ears.

Friday morning I was there when the store opened and grabbed the tags off those chairs so fast.  My first though was that I would recover them until I remembered I can barely sew a straight line.  Reupholstery is expensive and since the chairs are in such great shape and I like the fabric, I can put that off a few years.

When I placed the new chairs in the room I literally jumped up and down. I always thought that was just a saying but it's real.  When you are completely giddy about something you really do jump up and down!  We use our dining room a lot so these chairs will be very loved.

The old chairs.  It sounds extremely bratty but after 10 years I was just sick of them.  They were getting a little grungy and I wanted something bigger to change the whole look of the room.

Of course I found some other deals as well.  I paid $7.50 for the rollerblades (for Emry), $3.00 for the tablecloth (cause I don't  need another one), $0.60 for both magazines, and $6.00 for some random material that I will let the girls try and make some little quilts or blankets with.

$1.00 for some cloth napkins, a microfiber and 2 potholders.  Do you see that $0.20, yes, that means I got them for $0.10 each, it so made my day.  And microfibers can be $3 or $4 each new, which this one was.  I tend not to use too many chemical cleaning products so I love microfibers.

$1.00 for a cute rainbow shirt for Lila & $0.50 for a robe for Ethan.  Can we talk about the robe?  This robe was brand new and retails for about $15.00.  I should know because I've bought a few at Costco.  We go to our community pool year round and my kids wear their robes instead of bringing a towel.  This is an extra Large so it will be perfect in a year or 2 for Ethan.  So happy!

$3.00 for the shirt and leggings for Lila and $1.50 for the pink dress I got for my niece Kiera.

This is Emry & I after church yesterday.  My skirt was bought for $2.00 and Emry's dress for $6.00.  Her dress was a bit expensive (from a thrifting point of view anyway) but she really liked it and it is so hard for me to find modest  clothes for her.  I have pretty strict standards for my girls, their dresses need to be at least to their knee, preferably longer, so when I find something that works I bite the bullet.

I loved this bright blue skirt as soon as I saw it. Usually I am super lazy and go with dresses as they require no coordinating, but it fit like a glove so I had to get it.  I paired it with a fun top I got a few years ago at Marshall's and some bright shoes I got on clearance at Kohl's for $8.00.  Usually I don't go to Kohl's but I went during the Christmas holiday with my sister and saw these.  Even though they're a 9 and I wear an 8.5, I buckled em' tight and made em work.

Grand total was $132.10.  Pretty good February finds if I do say so myself.

  1. I had to giggle when I read your comment "I am super lazy and go with dresses" that is so totally me. I would much rather slap on a dress and go then have to worry about what goes together.
I love Emry's dress the skirt portion is just beautiful.

I am glad you did one of these post's it always makes me inspired to make use of second hand stores before buying new...plus you ALWAYS get the best deals.

    1. Thanks! But know too many times I leave empty handed. I've done it long enough though I can go through the whole store in about 30 minutes. I am a pro :) It doesn't hurt that on Thursdays Ethan goes home after school with his cousin, I drop Emry off at play practice, Lila at gymnastics and then go down the block to my favorite thrift store. By myself!

  2. Every time you make one of these posts I want to immediately hop on a plane and come thrift shopping with you! I went this weekend and ended up with nothing (although I found a couple of chairs too--I might go back later this week and hope their color tag is half off, because the full price is still pretty expensive.) LOVE love that blue skirt!

  4. You and I would be the best thrifters together!! I haven't bought anything retail for as long as I can remember.

Well, I take that back, my dining room set was bought new - and we only use it when company comes over - drives me nuts!

  5. Look at you gorgeous girls!! I love the dress AND the skirt! I don't go to the thrift stores often enough. We live sooooo far out, I have to plan numerous errands at a time, and it never seems to make the cut off :/

    1. The 50% day was a Christian thrift store (my favorite & the best deals), I only go to Salvation Army and Goodwill when they have half off days because they tend to be a tad bit expensive.

  9. I am inspired by your thift store posts! Me and my little one(Brody -age 5) hit the local Goodwill last Friday! I wanted to see what I could find. I may not be a regular thirft store shopper but I do love and recognize a good deal. Every tag I lookedat/flipped over at the Goodwill seemed so high. All we bought were a couple of books for Brody! He was thrilled. I am going to try to find some smaller thrift stores around town and see how I do.
p.s. LOVE,LOVE,LOVE your blue skirt. I almost caved and bought one at Loft for $45.00. You scored aa great deal!

    1. I agree, the Goodwill IS expensive. Sometimes I want to tell them, "Uh, I can get this new for the same price, you need to mark it down". I only shop Goodwill when they have 50% days, you should get a schedule because they usually do it every month the same day.

My favorite thrift stores are the little Christian ones, they have the best deals.

All thrift stores usually do sales on Holidays, just like the regular stores, they even do a black Friday!

  18. I wish we didn't live on opposite coasts! I would so love to go with you and have you teach me your ways. When I go, I get bummed out pretty quickly because I only see the stuff that isn't nice and then I leave. I guess I just need to go in there when I have time to scope the place out and make an effort to search for the good stuff!
And that robe, is going to look so cute on Ethan! It's perfect!!
