Being a Grown Up

Walking the grocery store aisles sometimes I just want to save myself the hassle of baking and grab the cookies off the shelf that won't have me measuring, mixing, sweeping and doing dishes for the next hour.

But then I remind myself 'we' don't eat those foods.  Drat!
(I am sure if you asked my kids they'd say we most definitely DO eat those foods.  They're a brainwashing work in progress)

I actually do love baking.  It's just trying to make time along with everything else.

I made these Peanut Butter Snack Squares because being a responsible mom I wanted a wholesome treat for the kids when they came home from school.  They fit my checklist of easy, fast, reallyreallygood, and healthy.

Lila & I devoured them.

I enjoyed them the next day while taking a treat break watching House Hunters International realizing that all Glenn has to do is find a job on the shores of Hawaii, Fiji or Australia and we too could wake up to the sound of the ocean.

Cause' that's what grown ups do.

    1. Don't like peanut butter? That does not register with me.

  2. Yum... these look so moist and delicious. I would move to Hawaii, Fiji or Australia in a moments notice! :)

    1. They are. I forgot to mention I cooked them almost 10 minutes longer than the recipe said, maybe it's just personal preference.

    1. I've only started watching it this month. How did I never know this awesome show existed?

  6. I've told Kevin the same thing as we watch HHI. He too needs to find a cool international job; I've always wanted to be an ex-pat somewhere, at least for a short time.

  7. Good for you! My willpower is not always quite so strong in the cookie aisle. Sigh. Baking is pretty fabulous though.

  8. I have the same struggles...I want to grab the easy cookies/treats, but I know homemade is so much better! It'll still be a treat, but with real ingredients (and much better flavor and taste). Want to come make me those PB squares so I can have a snack after work? :) Sounds YUM.

    1. Honestly they are super easy. I froze some because Lila and I both like cookies and treats straight from the freezer. Plus it's not the best for me to see treats on my counter everyday.

    2. Definitely adding them to my list of things to make--once I finally get around to picking up some more peanut butter. I can go without other groceries, but low on PB? Disaster. And I wish the freezer slowed me down, but I love frozen treats and still know they are there, haha. Only slightly better than on the counter in plain view...

  9. Hi, did you actually use whole wheat pastry flour or just whole wheat? I just printed this recipe. It would be great for an FHE treat. Can't wait to try it. I love that picture of Lila. The beautiful sky in the background compliments her very well.

    Love and miss you,
    Shauna

    1. I just used my ground wheat, I always do. I lessened the sugar a little and baked it for 10 minutes longer than the recipe said.

I realized after I posted the picture how amazingly blue the sky is. And you know it's real cause I couldn't use photoshop/lightroom etc. if my life depended on it.

  10. those look yummy and the texture sounds so good too! Mmm! homemade goodies are so much better than store bought...well unless you go to a yummy bakery. if only we could be adults but with less responsibilities and less stable/settled! ;) sometimes i wish after we first got married we would have had a crazy adventure living/working someplace away instead of trying to hurry up and finish school/do responsible things because once you are settled down it is so much harder!

    1. Thanks for believing in my dream, it shouldn't be that hard right? And I should add that I baked the treats for almost 10 minutes longer than the recipe said. Not sure how hers turned out so well.

  12. I love that you ate a treat and watched House Hunters! I consider it a reward every night. I get the kids "down" and watch House Hunters or HH International and eat a treat. Bad habit almost. It's like I have no other way to relax! I am cracking up that you do the same thing.

  13. those look so good! i guess being a parent means saying yes to the good stuff and no to the bad stuff even when they beg. and watching HH especially the international version makes me want to go on vacation all the time!

    1. They call for oats, peanut butter and whole wheat, and I lessened the sugar as I usually do, so as far as a treat, they're a pretty great choice.

    1. It's true, there are so few shows that both adults and kids can watch & enjoy together. It's so fun to see other parts of the world and how they live.

  25. I actually love baking better than most cooking, though I can't keep my mitts out of what I make. Those look delicious!

And I was looking at jobs for my husband in Hawaii a couple of months ago. I have to dream. :)

    1. Exactly, you've got to work somewhere. And I can't not eat the treats either, that's why I have lots of ziploc freezer bags, into the freezer they go.

  26. The store cookies ARE so tempting! But then you buy them, and they have all that artificial flavoring and weird aftertaste and you wonder why you spend 4 times more on store cookies than making them yourself. I know why I shouldn't buy them, but they still call my name at the grocery store. ; p Your treats look amazing and you totally should get a house by the sea. If I were some rich broad with an oceanside mansion, I'd hire you to be my personal baker!

  28. Haha, I LOVE House Hunters International!!!!!!! Like a whole bunch. I'm trying to not eat sweets at all because I've gotten complacent about it these last few weeks...go figure!

And he actually bought me breakfast due to the fact that I discovered it for him... lol. So allow me to reword this.... Thank YOU for the meal!!
