Better than Jewelry

I can't believe I got through that!  Towards the end I almost lost it as Emry was being super funny with the video camera, but we did it.

I noticed we didn't get a good shot of the actual rollers so I wanted to post some pics of them.  The groats themselves are really soft and roll quite easy.

view from the top                                                                               view from underneath

Now we know why they're called rolled oats, they are literally rolled.  Look at those ridges!!!!!!  I am so in love.

Now that I know how to put videos on here, get ready for some serious footage of the Wallwork kids.  Oh yeah, it's coming.  Ready or Not.

    1. Remember the definition of brave isn't not being scared, it's doing something EVEN THOUGH you're scared. My roller deserves to be famous, it's awesome!

  5. Brave, indeed! I don't think I could ever do a video post... I can't even get a regular, non-video post done!

    1. I find the older I get the braver I get and the more likely I am to make a fool of myself and not care. A video had to be done, pics alone would not have done my fabulous oat roller justice.

    1. Mandy I can't believe I did. I am the most technology challenged person alive. We'll see if I can remember how to do it all.

    1. Thanks. I usually don't indulge in really rich food but am great at taking a million bites of everyone's around me, that way I don't feel bad right?

  8. You're just so adorable. Seriously. :o) And that is totally better than jewelry! I think I need one, too!!! Then we could have fresh eggs AND fresh oats for breakfast! Where do you buy the groats, though? And why are they called groats??

    1. Oat Groats are what they are when they are harvested. Steel cut would be the next form, then rolled oats, then instant. Once rolled or ground they are susceptible to losing their nutrients. That is why I like to grind my flours and oats fresh, so they retain as many of their original nutrients as possible.

    2. I realized I didn't answer your question. I get them at an actual grain mill about an hour from my home. I get Wheat Kernals, Oat Groats, Amaranth, really they sell any type of grain you want. I buy in bulk to save money and if they are not ground they have a long shelf life.

You can order online but I am sure the shipping would be astronomical. I would inquire about grains at your local health food store. If you are interested I am sure they could order for you.

    1. You could grind the groats and then you would have oat bran. The taste, in my humble opinion, is outstanding.

  14. It's so fun to hear your voice again! You are so stinking cute Marie!! Yum...fresh oats!! By the way I still love the coconut butter on steel cut oatmeal, thanks! I remember my mom grinding her wheat on the back patio when I was little- so good to make things super fresh and healthy! Have a great weekend!

    1. My mom too. I got smart and make my kids do it. On one side of my wheat grinder the clasp is broken so there is residual wheat powder everywhere. I make them do it outside of course, for all the neighbors to hear.

  15. Love the video Marie! You are so technical to know how to do that! I am lucky I get my posts up in one piece!

    Enjoy your weekend!

    1. I have no technology knowledge whatsoever. Emry filmed and my husband put it on the blog. I couldn't figure how to put up a video if my life depended on it. But thanks for thinking I could!

  25. Is anything done to oats between being harvested and being rolled? I'm just thinking that my dad is a farmer, so I could pick up some fresh oats from him...I'm not sure, but it seems like there's a step in between the combine and the roller.
