The Boy is Mine

Ethan is a growing boy.  As of a few months ago he is eating double what he used to.  Maybe triple.  He wakes up starving.  He comes home from school starving.  He eats a before dinner snack,  an after dinner meal and a 'goodnight' snack.  I am sure he would eat more at school if he wasn't so darn busy being the reigning handball champ, or as he calls it "King of the Court".

Wednesday morning he said something about wanting cinnamon rolls.  I can do that!

I am not sure what it is about that boy but he literally melts my heart every single day.  I guess it's just a mother's love.  The kind of love that makes you want to sit and stare at your child and take it all in.

I am noticing there's something different with a boy.  I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it has something to do with knowing that I am irreplaceable to my girls, but with Ethan, one of these days some girl is going to up and steal his heart away and he won't be mine anymore.

So if Ethan wants cinnamon rolls, I am making them.  I want to make all his culinary wishes come true so that the bar will be set high and he will marry a girl who will feed my baby well.  I guess he won't be a baby anymore, and I guess he's not a baby now, but that's beside the point.

And yes I use my hands to spread the butter.  They can also sub  for a spatula, a spoon or even measuring cups in a pinch.  And by pinch I mean being too lazy to grab the measuring cups.

Here's little Miss Lila eating the photo shoot roll.  Lila likes everything fancy.  My mom has been trying to downsize her house since my sister moved in and couldn't store her mostly broken china anymore.  I love getting rid of things but couldn't bear the thought of my Grandmothers China getting thrown out.  It may be cracked and chipped, but I love it.

I also love this table set that a friend was getting rid of.  I've been wanting patio furniture and am going to see if I can weather proof it.

Dining Al Fresco is tres chic, not to mention I can forgo the after dinner sweep.  What I noticed after posting these pictures is the book in both Ethan and Lila's picture.  It's the same book.  We have a kajillion books in the house but if one kid has a book, they all want to read it.  Immediately.

Oh and the rolls....  Turned out better than I hoped.  Soft and fluffy, perfectly tender and flaky.  I used THIS recipe.  Of course I had to add in some whole wheat and lessen the sugar but seriously, who's going  to turn down a cinnamon roll?

So as Ethan grows so will his appetite.  I am sure I'll spend many more hours in the kitchen whipping up anything he asks for.

To all the future girls in my son's life.  You may have youth and beauty (and a little thing like not being related to him) to make him fall more in love with you.  But I'll have more than 20 years of feeding him before you even enter the picture.

Think you know the way to a man's heart?

Bring It.

  1. Vanilla pudding cinnamon rolls? Wow, that's a show stopper for sure. They look divine, as do all of your culinary creations.

It's heart warming to hear your love for Ethan. Glad you have that special bond with him. He's so darn cute, I can see how would not want to stop staring at him.

You and Lila have the same hands.

    Love you,

    Shauna

    1. Love you right back. Make the rolls, you might want to double the recipe though with your clan. It's a little ridiculous how in love we can be with our kids right? Ridiculously wonderful!

  2. Your kids are seriously too cute.
I think mothers of boys should get medals. Especially ones who had all boys!
It would be so hard for them to fall in love with a girlie and leave them. But I know
they still love their mommies! No wife can replace love for a mommy!

    1. My sister in law has 4 boys no girls. She puts up with a lot of loud noise and wrestling. She's pretty much a saint.

  3. This is one of the sweetest posts I've ever read. (I have only one child (for now). A boy, you know.:)) I even have a few tears in my eyes now!? :/

    Have a great weekend!! :)

  5. He is darling!! If you think he eats a lot now, just wait until he hits 10+. Yikes. I've got five boys and my oldest two eat more than myself and my two daughters combined. It is a joyous thing though because I love preparing foods that they love. I try not to think about the young lady in their future lives though because I get sad.

    1. Yes you do have your hands full for sure. I have 6 brothers and we would buy 6 gallons of milk at a time. I am definitely seeing my grocery bill go up and I am sure it will continue to.

    1. If she doesn't cook she's gonna have to be willing to learn. True love is great and all, but you can only eat mac & cheese so many times.

  11. I only have boys and sometimes it makes me sad when I think about how close my mom and I are and that it is different to be a grandmother to your DAUGHTER'S kids.

  12. So, according to Lila's "busy as a bee" t-shirt, she's the next Buzz? Or Buzz Jr.? So cute.

    1. Oh she is so me. She was wearing her "Lila" bracelet that you made her years ago and lost it yesterday at school, she came home crying and was devastated. I told her we'd make another one. Eventually.

  14. Mother's and sons is a unique relationship. I have two boys and my 4 year old seems to think we will be married one day...really who can rock breakfast food better than mom? Your rolls look fantastic (so fluffy and with plenty of topping). I am going to check out the recipe and see if I've got the ingredients to make it for my little brood :)

    Have a great weekend Marie!

    1. Yes Ethan always tells me "mom, I will always love you more than you love me" and that he wants to marry me. We have to enjoy it while it lasts.

  15. Cinnamon buns ARE the way to any kid's heart! When I think of my grandmother, one of the first things that comes to mind is still her cinnamon buns--no one else can make them the same, even though we all have her recipe.

  16. Well...it looks like his future wife better know how to make cinnamon rolls (and as good as yours). ;) And by the way they look delicious! xo

  18. awww so cute, Marie. Each one of your posts just makes it's way straight into my heart. All girls will have such a tough time measuring up to what Ethan's mother did for him. They will also have a huge complex when they see how beautiful his mother is in every possible way.
The cinnamon rolls look delish. I could grab one right now, if I could.

  19. Awww, so sweet! Such a sweet relationship, you two. I always wanted a son too. Just daughters so far :)

  23. You set that bar high, lady! I think being able to create a strong food tradition for your family is something that is so invaluable.

p.s. Keep us posted on if weatherizing the table and chairs works - that would be an absolutely gorgeous set for the outdoors.

  24. So sweet! I hope when I have more kids that I have a boy. Little boys are so precious to me. They're so sweet and innocent. Little girls are too, of course, but there's something about how little boys are sensitive that really makes me melt. They grow up to be men that aren't "suppose" to show feelings or cry and as a child they do.

  25. Btw, no woman could ever take your place! I know, because I've seen the recipes you've posted! ;-)

  26. I just said 'mmm hmmmm' and my hubby asked 'what's that about?'. I responded 'boys growing up.' It is so true that girl will always call their momma, but boys will eventually stop. Soak up every moment you can!

  27. Hey Marie...Megan Gunyan here...I've become a regular blog-stalker of yours. Hope you don't mind! Ethan is so cute...and can I just say, I feel the same way about my son, Jake? He can never grow up or get married. Sorry pal. You're stuck with me! I love your pics and I'm pretty sure I can smell your baking from here! Ha! Have a wonderful day!

  28. Ha ha, I love your last picture and statement, touche! But how funny Ethan is turning into a big kid and wanting food all the time!! Boys and their mamas...it's the best. Yum with your cinnamon rolls- you can't go wrong!

  29. This makes me slightly happy I don't have any boys. I'm not sure I could keep their bellies filled with my cooking skills (or I guess my lack of cooking skills).

  30. I always wanted a little boy. I can see from his photos and read in your words that he has definitely won your heart.
Those cinnamon rolls look amazing! I may just have to see if I can do those myself. Wish you lived closer to help ;-)

  31. Such a good point when comparing sons and daughters...the girls are there for you forever! I never thought of it like that.

Love the cinnamon rolls - they look amazing. You are such a sweet mom to go to so much effort.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend my friend!

  32. First-time reader...LOVE your blog! Your relationship with your son is so sweet and I completely empathize. Just be careful not to alienate your son's future wife! It can be painful to be on the other side of the mother-son relationship, feeling as though your mother-in-law is in competition with you, a-la "Everybody Loves Raymond." You could damage your relationship with your son if you're too blunt about your "me first" feelings as well. As it says in the Bible, "A man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife." (Genesis 2:24) Believe me, it hurts to know that my son now loves another woman, but the Lord created marriage and He knows what is best for my baby! Praise Him for that!

    1. Welcome new reader, thanks so much for your thoughts. It seems so far away but I know he will grow up quickly. If Ethan's wife doesn't cook I really hope she would want to learn. As you will soon figure many of my thoughts are a mix of serious and in jest. I like to have fun with life and words.
