Just like my kids
I've been meaning to make THESE 'simple' treats for a while now. I've heard good things about them so they've been on my list.
The thing is, they're not so simple. The instructions said nothing about when to take them out of the pan. I, being a clever baker, realized they may stick as there is a fair amount of honey involved and while they were still warm I tested one.
Too late, I had to pry each one out scraping my cute little muffin tins. I was in a race against time as I had 3 pans and these little oat cakes were drying fast.
In the midst of removing these goodies I tossed the recipe into the garbage (ok, it wasn't that dramatic, but it sounds a lot better than 'putting it aside to be recycled') I wasn't going through this again.
Even after Pam-ing up my tins and adding a few minutes to the cooking time to make sure they were set, they were sticky and I had to handle them so gingerly so they wouldn't all fall apart.
They set. I had one. My kids had some. They're a treat for sure, but chock full of freshly ground oats and flax. I used the amount of honey called for, but left out a half cup of brown sugar.
I "dug the recipe out of the trash" & put it back in my binder. They're yummy, healthy and portable. I am not ready to give up on them. I am thinking a little wax paper in the tins would do wonders.
Besides I am used to sticky situations. Exhibit A
As frustrated as I get with my kiddos sometimes, they always have me coming back for more. Weirdly enough I just can't get enough of them.
My kids that is.
And apparently sticky treats as well.

haha you're funny! and those do look good, i think I'll have to make them sometime! Your kids are adorable :)
ReplyDeleteVery cute Marie. You always make me want to be a better mom. I love that picture of the kids, especially Lila. Hope you are having a good week. Love,
ReplyDeleteShauna
Funny I can say the same thing about you!
DeleteWhat if you put them in greased removable cupcake liners?
ReplyDeleteYou mean silicone ones? That's a fantastic idea, I think that would work perfectly.
DeleteThose look yummy! It is so frustrating when we are baking something and it sticks like that. I just want to throw the pan in the trash - not just the recipe!
ReplyDeleteMarie, maybe if you baked them on a silpat, forming them into circles it migh work. They do sound tasty!
ReplyDeleteGood idea but while they are baking they literally ooze butter, they don't harden up until the cooling phase.
DeleteGood thing you have an aptitude for sticky situations AND kids, since you've got a lot of both! P.S. Loving the new blog design. Quite aesthetically pleasing as usual, Marie.
ReplyDeleteThanks I won the re-design in a contest. I could have never done it myself. Bless those who know what they're doing on a computer.
DeleteI like healthy treats like that! My hubs is rather picky though (he's my 1st child ;).
ReplyDeleteMoo drives me crazy sometimes (a lot haha), but she is just too darn lovable!
Cheers.
Oh Camille you're in it deep for sure. I would rather deal with my 3 than a 1 year old any day. Although your girl is more cuddly and there are so many cute things going on every day, that age is Demanding with a capital D.
DeleteGotta love sticky treats and kiddos! :) I love your phrase "Pam-ing up my tins" haha!
ReplyDeleteOh I hate that! But it looks like you saved them! Yum! :)
ReplyDeleteyou impress me so much lady. you really do. 3 kids, ground oats and delish treats. teach me your ways.
ReplyDeleteoh yumm love your healthy little treats, I wish I could have some now.
ReplyDeleteDo you know how many times I've tossed out a recipe that didn't end well, just to end up digging it out of the paper bin the next morning because an idea of how to fix it came to me overnight? :o) I rarely ever give up on a recipe!
ReplyDeleteEveryone confessing their cooking disasters makes me feel better. I need to work on that huh?
DeleteKids are irresistible, aren't they!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they would pop out of silicone cupcake molds?
That's what someone else suggested and I am sure they would work perfectly.
DeleteI have to say, those sticky treats definitely look like they are worth making again. And your children...beautiful as always!
ReplyDeleteI hate it when recipes leave out important details. It's no fair.
ReplyDeleteThese cakes look they are worth digging the recipe out of the trash. I just found your blog through Fittothefinish and I am loving it. I am originally from the Seal Beach area (near Huntington Beach), but moved to Southern Utah 8 years ago. While I miss "Home", I do love it here. We just got back from a spring break trip to Oceanside on Saturday and my husband is now trying to convince me that we need to move to Temecula (we looked at homes there before moving here). But try convincing my 15 year old daughter who's a sophomore that she needs to leave her friends and volleyball team before she graduates from high school. I don't think so!!! I love your pictures. They remind me of home. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a sweet comment. Glad some of my pics could take you back, I have family in Utah so of course being there is always full of great memories.
DeleteTemecula is a dream. I would recommend this city to anyone, it's great! It's also a really wonderful place to be a Junior & Senior :D
Looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteI made a disaster-sticky recipe over the weekend! But it involved falafel, rather than tasty dessert treat. I scraped it out of the pan, and then left it scraped. I hate tossing food, but there was no way to redeem it. I think I would have found a way to redeem oats-and-honey, though. Some things are worth determination :)

DeleteI think we need a support group :)
DeleteHoly smack, I just hate baking. I am awful. cooking, fine. baking. oh man. one day you're going to teach me your ways, and teach me paitence.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about trial and error. I have made my fair share of goods gone awry. Just this morning I made bread and 2 of the loaves weren't cooked through. I am using them for french toast tomorrow.
DeleteI probably would have given up on the sticky treats if they stuck to the pan. I'm lazy like that.
ReplyDeleteparchment paper in muffin tins works great. saves a LOT of cleanup time and it looks cute too with the paper sticking up around the sticky treats, mini meatloafs, or whatever goodness your're making. they sound delish! and the kidlets are adorable as always. are you saying you want more??? ; )
ReplyDeleteThat's what I am doing next time for sure.
DeleteI'm impressed that you gave it another go. I would have pitched the whole mess and called it quits!
ReplyDeletesounds too yummy!
ReplyDeletexoxo navy & orange
Sorry there was some frustration, but I sure there is bound to be a solution out there. Keep at it just don't mame any more muffin tins :)
ReplyDeleteThere's always going to be some frustration in the kitchen right, it's just bound to happen.
DeleteI had sticky things...no joke. When Maya's hands are sticky I freak out! It's really a miracle I had a child at all, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI'm also impressed you gave it a second chance. Recipes get about half a chance from me. :)
Your family is so cute as always!! Those honey bunches look great, but I will definitely keep your advice in mind when making them! Hope you are having a great week! xoxo
ReplyDeletedid you scratch your muffin pans? I have plenty of times and hate looking at my muffin pans now. :-(
ReplyDeleteThe photograph is adorable.
This looks 'mmm...' :)
ReplyDeleteI wish you and your family (with these sweet kids!) a great weekend!!
Awh! I couldn't blame you for not getting enough of those cuties! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment on my book post...where are you in your Bible reading? Are you doing a read the Bible in a year thing? That's what I'm working on right now. 60 books from the library?! That's awesome!!
