Et tu, Emry?

See this cute little Greek Goddess?  She's a taker I'll tell you.  To be honest most kids are until you sit them down and explain in exhausting detail all that you do for them, which is of course what I had to do.

Yesterday as I am dropping Emry off she reminds me for the tenth time to go to Walmart and get a sheet for her toga.  I feel hurt that my daughter doesn't know me that well and tell her I am absolutely not buying a new sheet, I will go to the thrift store later.  I grab one for $3 and am elated when it's 1/2 off.  I've also made stops to get  fasteners for the toga and spent time the previous day helping her make baklava.  It's actually very easy, but a tad time consuming.

The hardest part was having these sticky honey triangles of goodness staring me down for two days before Emry whipped them off to school.  She's lucky there were any left to take, those things are addicting.

So after the baklava, after the thrift store, after taking kids to school and play practice, checking their homework, reading to them, doing their laundry and dinner (homemade rolls, salmon served with homemade mango/avocado salsa and an arugula salad)  I had to dash off to a church meeting. (I kinda wanna point out that their breakfast was french toast made from homemade bread made after I had run 6 miles)

The point to all of this is I have energy in the morning.  I even have some leftover energy in the afternoon.  At night, NO.   I go from a loving mother to evil stepmother before my kids even know what happened.

I came home from my meeting, my, ahem, Church meeting only to have Emry not in bed but waiting for me to put her hair in curlers.  Ethan also came out of his room saying no one ever made him hot chocolate.  I was livid.  I was not sweet or caring or in the mood to homemake anything or do anyone's hair.  I wanted to crawl under my covers by myself and read for 30 minutes before crashing out.

I told Ethan in a firm but scary voice that it was his fault he hadn't asked his dad, his sister, his other sister or the dog to make his beloved hot chocolate.  Then I proceeded to tell Emry how exhausted I was and  ALL I did for her and did I really have to come home only to find yet ANOTHER task?

That answer would be yes.

She's a kid, so of couse she just stared at me with her big blue eyes like 'what the heck is this crazy woman rambling on about, isn't it her job to be at my beck & call?'

I did her hair.

I may have yanked it around a bit to let her know how seriously tired I was.  She has a freakishly hard head like I do so it probably didn't phase her.

One of these days I am going make them suffer and have cold cereal for breakfast.

I'll totally show them.

  2. Ha! You're a riot. I never could do all that you do. I have no energy in the evenings either (and I don't even run 6 miles, etc). Everything looks like it come out wonderfully though. Please mail baklava my way ASAP>

    1. I could never do all that you do! You have a job that requires brain power, I just have to develop a lot more patience, which is a definite work in progress.

  3. LOL. Yes, that'll definitely teach them. ;o) Oh to be a child growing up in your house. They likely have no idea how much better they have it that most kids food-wise. They'll thank you in 20 years.

I'd like that avocado/mango salsa recipe if you've got a minute. I make salmon every week and I'm always looking for something different to do to it so that everyone doesn't get disappointed when they see we are having salmon yet again. ;o)

    1. 1 mango, 1/2 red onion, 1 red bell pepper, 1 jalepeno, 1 avocado, dice all and add in juice of 1 lime, 1 T brown sugar, chopped cilantro and S&P to taste.

Obviously feel free to decrease or increase any ingredient, you can't go wrong with this recipe. I would recommend making it a day ahead or the morning of. If you do it ahead of time wait to add in the avocado until the end.

    1. Thank you but I am human and I think the mom in me expires at 9pm, there is nothing nice about me after that hour.

  7. I agree that you are an incredible mom. I think you might be half super hero or machine because there is no way I could do half of what you accomplish on a day to day basis. You truly rock!

    1. No, no superhero here. I am at home all day, I should be able to accomplish a lot. Just not after dark, I definitely turn into a different mom altogether.

  8. You have so much more energy than I do. For one, my kids have cold cereal for breakfast all the time. And second, she looks gorgeous.

    1. Thanks. Really making them elaborate breakfasts is my call, they could probably care less. As far as the energy, I start off strong but go downhill fast. Probably a combination of getting older, my RA and just life/kids in general.

  9. "I feel hurt that my daughter doesn't know me that well and tell her I am absolutely not buying a new sheet, I will go to the thrift store later." This was my favorite part of the entire day. For sure.

    1. You're welcome for the recipe. I love her hair too because she is such a tomboy (& lazy with her hair like me) that 99% of the time it's in a ponytail, so it's fun to see it down for a change.

  12. Emry looks great! Is this the class that she did the video for? That was hilarious you've got to post that thing. I love her hair. I just made salmon and mango salsa for some women who've had new babies and we had some of course. So good, especially when the weather is officially warm. You continue to be awesome Marie, no doubt about it! Love you,

  13. Ill never forget the first time Kev asked me, "Why are you tired? What'd you do all day?"

Cold cereal will definitely show 'em.

  14. There are definitely parts of the day where I'm nicer and parts of the day where everything is just more trying. The worst part is how I can tell that I'm losing my patience and there is just nothing to be done to regain it.

All of that aside, Emry does look just gorgeous in her outfit. Your efforts were well worth the time and I'm sure that she'll remember it for a long time.

  15. Being a mother is definitely a pretty thankless job but you are awesome and don't you ever forget it! Emry looks gorgeous! Definite greek goddess material.

  16. Of course you shouldn't buy a new sheet! Smart move Marie...I would have never thought of it. :)

And cold cereal is a staple around here. When I'm feeling generous I'll actually pull out a bowl, spoon, and the milk. Maya is all over herself thanking me on those mornings. :)

    Emry is gorgeous!

  17. I seem to be the opposite. In the mornings I'm not prepared for anything but at night I'm more likely to do stuff for the kids.

  18. haha, you sure will show them with that cold cereal ;)
    you are too funny girl!
and she looks absolutely adorable in her little "goddess" outfit!

  19. You so wrote about my day here! I'm not totally homemade like you but I do my best. At the end of the night I am just done sometimes. D.O.N.E. DONE!

My girls get cereal as a treat every once in a while and only on the weekends. I used to get it on the weekends when my mom wanted off. Some days, I think the other moms in the world may know just what they are doing with a quick bowl of cereal! ;-)

  21. OPA!! I'm Greek and I must say that baklava looks quite delicious. And Emry makes quite the cute little Greek goddess!

  22. Well she turned out fantastic and the baklava looks so very delicious and crisp on top.

Kids never know that parents can't do everything, that you need a break. I don't think it really sinks in until they are grown themselves.

Hopefully today will be a good day !!!
