Color Me rAD

Emry ran in her second organized race (besides school races) last Saturday (2nd from right).  One of her best friend's, Annie, was running with her 3 sisters and invited Emry to run with them.  Annie wanted a partner as all her sisters are super speedy.  The sister in the middle is actually on scholarship at BYU and runs something like a 4 min mile. Anyone that ridiculously fast deserves a free education.

Emry & Annie prepped for 2 weeks for this race.  It was so cute to see them meet 3x a week to go on little runs around the neighborhood.  Emry had the best time preparing for and running this race, it was fun to hear all about it.  She loved the theme of the race which was basically getting covered in color in many different forms.

It's funny because as much as I don't participate in organized races, if it makes a positive impact on my daughter I am all for it. To her it's all still fun and games and I fully support that.

For me it's all sweat and effort.  I actually do enjoy running and exercise, but I am not gonna pay to do it, it's against my religion.  I've participated in a few races and was always bummed I didn't run that morning for free and then take the cash and go shopping.

But everything changes when you have kids.  If this is what it takes for exercise to become as huge a part of my kids life as it is mine, I am completely on board.  If you see me running a marathon in a few years (cursing and dying in the process), you'll know why.

  1. Congratulations to Emry. I am NOT a fan of running, but for those who can do it I applaud you.

I am more of a walk/run (more walk) kind of girl.

If you run the marathon I am sure you will have a large support crowd!

  2. I want to do a color run so badly! And I'm with ya--I have a hard time grasping the concept of paying to run...when I can just run for free (and in the same location, even!)...that's one I would totally do, just for the fun of it!

  3. I am in the same boat as you on the marathons. So far, they hold no appeal for me whatsoever. I'll stick with the Rangars and Half Marathons. I do love running so I don't mind paying for an organized race.
Way to go, Emry. And I must say that you looked very cute when you came home that day after the race. Any color looks good on you! ;)

  4. What a fun idea behind a race! And I love the girls' shirts.

    I wish I loved exercise...

  5. Totally understand what you mean about paying to run a race! It's so expensive, but then again that money is usually going to a charity or something ^^ Still can't believe I've paid 80$ to register for my upcoming half marathon, that in itself motivates me to run lol!

    1. I am pretty motivated when it comes to working out so for those that aren't I think a race is great. If it takes 80 bucks to force yourself to move your body I'd consider it money well spent.

  6. Oh congratulations Miss Emry on such a wonderful, colorful run! I think one of the things I love the most about running is that it is such an empowering activity - it's the proof of your hard work and proof of your body's ability to work in perfect sync. So I think it's great that she's enjoying it right now.

I tend to register for longer races only because, like you, most of the time I'd much rather just take myself on a run. That being said, when I am racing, I am so inspired by the runners around me and have only met wonderfully kind people while I've been out on the course.

p.s. If you do end up running a marathon, I will absolutely be cheering you on the whole way!

  8. I had fun at the color ru too! Funny I was looking for you in that first picture! When you begin training for a marathon let me know so we can do it together! You are such a good mommy!

  9. I'm with you on paying to run. I would much rather run to the mall and spend my cash there but if the kids wanted me to run in a race, I would of course do it.

  10. This looks like so much FUN!!! We have something like it here in Nashville called The Color Run. I didn't do it because I'm like you - I don't like to pay to run. But I still do 2-3 times a year for the long distance races. I can't help myself. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the t-shirts...

    1. I must say the t-shirt she got was the nicest race t I've ever seen. The cotton is so nice and soft.

  11. What a great way for Emry to get involved in exercising. If you can keep a smile on her face like that, not only will her body crave the movement but so will her mind.
And how beautiful are all of the girls covered in color?! I love it!!

  12. That's so awesome. I love the colors. Although I hope they didn't mess up the interior of your car. Looks tricky in that regard. I wish I could sucker my girlfriends into group exercise events. Everyone's always so busy. Best to start young! These ladies have the right idea!

    1. I actually didn't go, Annie's mom took them all. We had company that weekend and I was busy all morning making cinnamon rolls and prepping food to take to the beach. Emry raced in San Diego, got home at about 9:30 only to get back in the car and head South again to the beach. I told her to shower but she said the beach would take care of it. It did.

  13. I totally want to do this race! I've seen it around the country and it looks like a BLAST! Glad it was a good experience!

  14. My daughter did one of those colorful races recently. I'm with you about it. If it keeps them active fit and happy to be doing it, it's a win! (However saving the money for shopping isn't an altogether rotten idea either.)

  15. How cute! I love that they're getting into running at such a young age, they'll be so much happier and healthier when they're all grown up!

    1. Agree. I read somewhere that when parents exercise the likelihood of there children exercising is around 90%. Awesome stats.

  17. That is so cool! What a wonderful experience for her (although I'd be nervous to have them sit in my car afterward!).

  18. But, when you run in a race, you get a cool t-shirt!
